Gretel has been adopted (YAAAY!!)

&

Hansel has been making great progress! Here are a few words (&pics) from his foster mom :)

"Hansel is great! While he is definitely still a puppy at heart (needs chew toys!!), he is a sweetheart. He loves to play with all of my dogs. I think he is in love with my pup, Angel. He is good with the cats. Curious but doesn't chase. He is very good with the children. The first day he came to our home, he went to my oldest (9) and laid down beside her on the floor and laid his head in her lap. My 3yr old is very energetic and runs around (literally) with Hansel and Angel outside. Or he rides his bike and Hansel and Angel follow behind him. =) Hansel is learning his house manners very well. He is housetrained fully now. =) He understands he is only allowed on that one chair and doesn't try for any other furniture. He goes to his crate when I say "Its bedtime." He is still alittle timid with "big people", but is learning to trust. When he first came home with us, he was very shy and would come up to us. He learned to like me quickly (the woman with the treats and loving touches). It has taken longer for him to trust my husband, but will come up to him now. He wants to be loved, he's just not sure if everyone is nice. These pictures were taken today. He had a full and fun day playing in the leaves. Now he is all tuckered out and wants his nap before dinner. We are happy to have him."

If you're looking for a new family member please consider Hansel, he has so much love to give!!

Great improvements

Hansel and Gretel have made great improvenments in the past month. They are both altered, up to date on shots and growing more hair every day!!
Here are a few new pictures of Gretel at her new foster home. She went to a wonderful foster home on Saturday October 24th. Hansel is hoping for a foster home soon. They both will be on daily doses of ivermictin until all their hair returns, then another month after clean skin scapes. They ARE NOT contagious. If you can foster Hansel please fill out a foster application at  http://www.dogs2ndchance.org/foster-application or contact Linda at dogs2ndchance@gmail.com.

Great Improvement

Hansel and Gretel are improving each and every day!! The IV fluids and antibiotics have turned Gretel back into a dog.
Hansel's hair is coming back and you can barely tell he was a helpless looking creature less than 2 weeks ago when he arrived at Northgate.
Gretel is amazing, she wants to play & bark & have fun. She is gaining weight and little fuzz hair is arriving slowly.
New pictures coming soon.
The only problem I foresee is if we have to separate them in the future. She is VERY dependent on Hansel.
When their round of antibiotics is complete, we will discuss neutering Hansel, although we do not want to create a set back. They both will need the Ivermictin for months. Gretel may need more medication for an extended period, we will evaluate when this round is finished.
Please look in your hearts and to your neighbors to consider fostering this pair. It will be at least 3-4 months of loving care, that your heart will be rewarded daily from Hansel and Gretel. The boarding costs are adding up , but thanks to your generous donations, we do not have to rush their recuperation in the hospital, where they receive much needed care and the watchful eye of Dr Gullett.

Dr Gullett is concerned

Dr Gullett is very concerned about our sweet girl Gretel. She is going  do a urinanalaysis due to her high calcium levels and start her on IV because her white blood count is too low. Thanks again to all!!
Keep her in your thoughts and prayers!!

thanks to all/ Foster Home needed soon

Thanks to all that have sent financial & moral support. These babies are so sweet!! Dr Gullett guesses their age at around 6 months. Gretel she thinks is a full blooded boxer. Hansel could be a Shepherd mix.
Hansel is fairing well although he has a long recovery. He destroyed what I thought would be a good bed, an outdoor chaise lounge chair cushion. It is a cushion no more, just a cover. Oh well at least he enjoyed destroying it!!
Gretel on the other hand, is full of infection, has a low white blood count and high calcium count. She is also starting to show beginning signs of distemper. She was already on antibiotics for infection so we added antihistamines along with daily ivermictin and pain medication. I hope it is an reaction to the vaccine, but Dr Gullett has them in a patient room right now to be safe. She is the sweetest baby. You open the door to see them and she & Hansel get up to show their love!
They will make some splendid companions when all the pain and suffering is over.
Right now we are looking for a inside foster home for them. They can not board with out altering and their bodies are just took weak. They will be ready to leave the hospital soon, so please consider fostering them temporarily until other arrangements can be made.
Bless you all.
Linda

Hansel & Gretel's story

Hansel and Gretel were abandoned, most likely thrown away like trash. They were befriended by a nice man and woman that started feeding them, caring for them the best the could. They knew the pups needed medical attention and reached out to the email rescue network in the Memphis area. Someone told them "just take them to the shelter". But Manny & Elkie knew that was a death sentence for sure.

They continued to care for the pups and waited a week or so and tried the email community again. This time several strangers banded together with the couple and got them to Northgate Animal Hospital.
They are safe, dry and have beed diagnosed with advance demodetic mange. Although not contagious, it must be very painful in this advanced stage. They have been started on antibiotics and will need daily medication for months. Dr Gullett stated they would not have survived another month without treatment. Their prognosis is good, but they have a long row to hoe. It will be winter before they have much hair and be ready for adoption.
Thank you Manny and Elke for helping these abandoned babies. Thank you Gwen for getting me involved. Thank you Janice, Leslie, Taylor and Teresa for your offers to help. Thank you Dr Gullett and staff at Northgate for caring for these castaways.

If you would like to help Hansel, Gretel, Rover{ who skinned his own dead tail, because some idiot put a rubber band on it cutting off all the circulation} or any of our loving abandoned dogs, PLEASE DONATE TODAY! We feel like we are running a Heartworm Hotel with all the heartworm positive dogs waiting on treatment in our care. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
